Maldon IV v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) on Sat 15 Sep 2018 at 12:30
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won won by 4 wickets
Match report
A youthful 2nd XI (8 U21's) travelled to Maldon looking to end the season on a high. Having won the toss, stand-in skipper Sam Collins elected to field putting faith in his pace attack. Calum McDonald and Troy Collins are probably the best opening bowling tandem in the division and soon had Maldon on the back-foot. Troy resticted the scoring whilst Calum took the wickets - ending with 4 - 14 off 7 hostile overs. Ethan Wyatt picked up a nice wicket but Richard 'on the spot' Polley stole the show with 5 for 12 off just 5 overs, reducing Maldon to 98 all out. A great bowling effort, terrifficly supported by a keen and enthusiastic performance in the field.
Duncan Wyatt opended the batting for EAG in their reply and took to the square with his Captain's words 'shepherd our young players to victory' ringing in his ears. And that's what he did, carrying his bat to an excellent 38 not out as the Green reached the required score for the loss of 6 wickets after 27 overs. There were a few tense moments as wickets fell but Duncan, supported by Sam Collins (21) and Calum McDonald (11 not out) stoicly kept EAG on course.
A strong end to the season from the 2nd XI, with three straight victories, giving the team 8 wins, 1 draw and 8 defeats. We lost vital players for extended periods this season through injury and exam schedules but all the ingredients are there for an excellent 2019 season.
