Match report Youngsters in thrilling victory
EAG U12 V Halstead U12 (Reduced to 15 overs each)

The game started a little later than planned and the weather was cool and overcast. Jake Egner opened the bowling and the Halstead opener at number 1 was straight into his stride hitting two fours before Jake got his line and length with three dot balls to complete the over. Richard Nunn opened the bowling at the other end and after finding his line and length had Halstead tagged back with some fierce deliveries and good fielding behind the wicket keeper by Matthew Dunlop. Jake took the third over with the wet ball causing problems a beer towel was called for to dry the ball, anyway he continued his second over as he finished his first but this time it was just 1 off the over. After the third over it was back to Richard who continued to pin the Halstead number down and eventually the pressure told and the Halstead no.2 was bowled.

As the team got up to 11 players following the arrival of Matthew Pyatt and Isaac Chapman, Matthew Pyatt and Harrison Sadler took over the bowling. Matthew continued to keep the bowling tight and really started to pin down the Halstead no.3, after a single it was the turn of Harrison to bowl. A couple of good bowls were then followed by the Halstead no.3 getting in his stride and striking the ball nicely. Back to Matthew to continue and he had the Halstead pair struggling again and there was an edge towards Isaac but it dropped short. This was followed by a classic off drive for 4 from the Halstead opener. Halstead were starting to look menacing as they drove the ball in the air towards Liam Firmin, but again it dropped short. Harrison continued again as the ball was driven in the air between Lawrence Riches and Nathan Scarf, it dropped to the ground and there was 2 runs for the Halstead no.3. It just did not seem to be EAG’s day. A tidy over from Harrison though kept it tight.

Into the 9th over with Oliver Gifford taking up the bowling, the Halstead opener powered the ball over the fielders but Matthew Pyatt was there with a great throw into Leighton Oxley Crisp and the wickets took a direct hit. Oliver ran in confidently and the Halstead no.3 edged it for Leighton to make a great catch at waist level to take the wicket. Isaac Chapman was brought into the attack and started with a good full toss to the useful Halstead opener. The second ball was right into the opener who hit the ball on the leg side in the air and great dive from Richard Nunn almost led to the wicket of the opener, but he just could not hold onto the catch. Isaac continued to press with a LBW appeal that was turned down by the umpire. Oliver was back in the bowling attack, but the Halstead opener now had his eye in and wanted to push the score along. A four to the leg side was followed by a high drive to Richard Nunn but he could not hold on to the catch. Isaac completed his final over with just one from the over.

The innings was coming towards its finale and it was still anyone’s game.

Liam Firmin then took over the bowling and looked very confident. The Halstead no.4 was having difficulty reading the bowling and it took an inside edge to get off the mark. That brought the Halstead opener to the crease who attempted to drive the ball on the off side, but this time drove the ball straight to Isaac who held on to the catch and dismissed the Halstead opener for 25. Oliver completed his over with 1 run and 1 wicket. Matthew Dunlop then cam to the wicket with some spin bowling. Instantly the Halstead batsman seemed to have difficulty with the bowling, playing and missing twice and eventually Matthew had the wicket he deserved. Liam completed the bowling with the 15th over bowling at the no.6. Again he kept it tight and the Halstead innings completed at 57 for 4.

Tea and biscuits were taken as the rain just started to be felt in the air as the parents shivered in front of the club house.

Out came the EAG openers of Isaac Chapman and Jake Egner. Isaac facing the first ball and managed to get it away for a quick single. The second over saw Isaac pull a couple of shots the leg side for two runs each side, then Isaac seemed to have been bowled out, but then the umpire called a no ball so Isaac was reprieved. Jake soon got off the mark with some good running between the wickets for a couple of quick singles. The pair seemed to be working quite together. During the third over Isaac glanced the ball for 4 runs and in the fourth over tow solid off drives brought a further two runs. The 5th over saw Isaac bowled out and in came Richard Nunn to take the wicket. As the bowling changed Jake pulled a good shot for 2 runs, however the next bowl was to prove jakes undoing as he was given LBW.

In came Nathan Scarff, who was straight into his stride with a single to the Halstead no.4 bowler. Then Nathan drove the ball high but fortunately it dropped short of any fielder. In the 8th over there was an LBW appeal that was turned down. Richard then got into the groove with a great pull shot to the boundary, that had the crowd cheering. Nathan then played a nice off drive for a single. A further 4 runs came Richards way with another great pull shot, everything seemed to be going EAG’s way as Nathan gained another single to mid on. Nathan shaped up well to pull a leg shot for a further single. Richard continued with a couple of singles, and then suddenly Richard edged the ball as he went to drive the ball and was caught. Was there yet to be a cruel twist in the game with a handful of runs to get in three overs?

In came Lawrence Riches to the crease and was immediately off the mark with single. Then we were into the last over with 3 to draw and 4 to win. The first ball saw Nathan out for 11 and that brought Matthew Pyatt to the wicket with still four runs to get to win. Some good bowling and solid batting from Mattehw brought us to the final ball with Lawrence to face with one to win! Down came the ball and Lawrence played a great off side drive to gain the valuable single and a winning start for EAG winning by 6 wickets.
