Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Brightlingsea II on Sat 24 May 2008 at 2pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost
Match report
On what began as a very hot day, the Development XI fielded a very much developing side. 6 of the starting places were occupied by under 15 players, with only 5 seniors to keep them in check.
Brightlingsea batted first, and the opening batsmen were faced with Ali Hammond and Georgio D'anna, one of the up and coming youngsters. Both bowled relatively well but with little success as the batsmen looked to get on top early on. The opening wicket fell to Georgio when the batsman chipped to mid-on, Danny Guy taking a smart catch. Despite the wicket Brightlingsea looked set to post a total in excess of 260. However a third of the way into the innings, David Merriday brought himself into the attack and delivered a spell of spin bowling that Shane Warne in his prime would have been proud of. Twice in his 11 overs he had hat-trick balls, and finished up with excellent figures of 4-32. With Danny Guy bowling from the other end and taking 2-41, Brightlingsea were looking at a somewhat lower score than first expected. Ali Hammond then returned for the final overs, and wrapped up two wickets in quick succession. The visitors finished their 45 overs on 220-9 although a disappointing 44 of them came from extras meaning that just 176 came off the bat.
When it was the Green's turn to bat, they got off to the best possible start, with openers Danny Guy and Ali Hammond racing to an opening partnership of 108. However, as the weather began to deteriorate, so did EAG's batting line up. Ali Hammond was the first of a succession of wickets to fall, departing for a respectable 44. With wickets falling regularly around him, Guy continued to smash the bowlers to all parts of the field, before holing out at Long-on just 10 short of what would have been an excellent century. After what was a very promising start to the innings, EAG were bowled out for 180 with 6 overs left to bat. The only resistance other than the two openers coming from Richard Parker who made 23. After Parker departed the last few wickets fell quickly to spinner Hempstead who got a slightly flattering 8 wickets, the other two being run outs.
So despite spells of very good cricket, and looking set for victory on more than one occasion, the development XI will have to wait to record their first win of the season.
