Chappel & Wakes Colne v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club PieRates XI on Wed 15 Jul 2015 at 18:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 48 runs
Match report
A veritable team performance by each and every PIErate.
Captain Woodhouse was late for the toss only for it to be lost by Richard Nunn resulting in EAG being put into bat first. No doubt the opposition captain had plenty of faith in its chasing ability with some strong hitters at the top of the order.
James Parker and Jamie Murray were sent into bat - Woodhouse thinking that as both were excellent runners between the wickets, they would sap the morale of the Chappel team - a tactic that worked as hard as Matt Parker on the groove he occupies in the sofa when not playing cricket.
These two stayed at the crease until over 7 the halfway mark, amassing a classy 89 runs in the process. James Parker (41) was the first to fall, slightly mis-cueing another straight drive over the top to mid off. Murray (37) departed the next over, undeniably though, both batsmen had performed their jobs to to a tee.
In at three was JP Purser desperately trying to claw his way out of a rut of dis-form. JP went some way towards this as well as performing an anchor role for the team as the supposed big-hitters Keeble and Woodhouse came to the crease around him. However neither managed to contribute significantly, scoring just 3 and 4 respectively - Woodhouse committing a cardinal sin of running on a misfield only to see the erect finger of Richard Parker over his right shoulder yet again.
Some useful contributions at the back end from Charlie Lovejoy and Matt Norris ensure the PIErates reached a very respectable total of 145 - mostly down to Murray and Parker up top.
Bowling and fielding started shakily, with Nunn and particularly Matt "Vesuviarse" Parker struggling to challenge the batsmen with length. Matt Parker's 16 deliveries in 2 overs went for a mammoth 36 runs despite the very valuable removal of Dow bowled for 20 odd. Moseley had done most of the hitting so far and seemed to punish anything in slot.
Roll on the T20 specialist bowler Ollie Stovell to replace Matt Parker at the pavilion end. Stovell's very useful darting off-breaks and variation of pace proved very effective, eventually leading to the demise of key wicket Tristan Moseley LBW which he of course claimed he had hit despite the crater he had excavated in the pitch trying to slog sweep over square leg.
Woodhouse came on at the other end and was also successful, also mixing up the pace with two caught from slower balls and two bowled with stumps cartwheeling everywhere. Neither bowler was prepared to concede a five-for to the other though as both ended up on 4 wickets, Stovell removing the welsh prop Adam Jones's goat farming cousin for the 10th wicket.
And so, the PIErates had won the league in comfort, style and a large box of pies. It's not all over yet though as the 'rates will contest the winners of the tuesday evening league - Real Oddies who haven't lost a game this year in evening cricket. Details TBC.
Here's the team results record:
Played: 12 Won: 9 Lost: 1 Void: 2 Runs for: 1078 Runs Conceded: 973 Wickets taken: 63 Wickets lost: 57
Let me just say how much of a pleasure and privilege (of nepotism) it has been for me to captain this side this year. A pool of all young, very able players with great attitude and spirit have made it possible for us to field 11 great players every week which seemed to prove difficult for a lot of other sides. We'll have the fine-subsidised curry after the chairman's trophy, both of which I will post details of as soon as I have them.
Cheers,
AW
