Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
20/20 cricket is a strange beast. Naturally the boys want to bat - they are coached to 'play themselves in', they want to stay at the crease, score some runs and not get out. However, this format leaves little time for this approach and those teams and players who adjust quickly, find that they flourish.
Restrictive bowling and sharp fielding are crucial and these skills, ably displayed by High Roding, condemned EAG this afternoon. Jamie and Elliot opened well, although struggled at times to get the ball off the square. Josh Chapman continued well but again, allowed too many dot balls go past. Charlie Lovejoy played some excellent shots and ran well and was unlucky to be run out by a direct hit from an accurate throw from deep.
After 10 overs, the visitors were only 37 for 1 - plenty of wickets in hand but not nearly enough runs. They finished on 89 for 6, several players sensing the urgency of the situation rather too late.
Elliott Drage bowled with control and limited the home side for his three overs, whereas most of EAG's deliveries were short or on the legs. Elliott also secured a run out with a good throw to the top of the stumps. Elliot Cryne kept wicket well against some inconsistent bowling, and together with captain Josh Chapman, kept the field moving and thinking. Positioning could have been clearer and tighter and we will work on this in training and in our next matches.
Well done, thank you to parents for the support on a beautiful afternoon, thank you also to High Roding for their hospitality and good luck to them for the following rounds of the competition.
