Chappel & WC v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Sunday T30 XI on Sat 25 Sep 2010 at
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won By 2 Wickets

Match report The 1st XI travelled to Chappel on a cold windy autumnal afternoon for their penultimate match of the season and came away with only the 4th win of the campaign by two wickets. The win was based on an outstanding bowling and fielding display plus an excellent partnership of 51 for the 7th wicket by the young Matt Murray and the not so young Keith Steel.

Steely and Giorgio opened the bowling and kept things tight on a slow pitch that was not easy to bat on. Giorgio was unlucky not to take an early wicket when he found an edge that only the umpire didn't hear. However Steely made the initial break through shortly after bowling the opener who had earlier survived, he then followed this up 2 overs later by taking 2 wickets in 3 balls, both good catches by Richard, to leave Chappel at 46-3 off 11 overs. Jack was then brought into the attack and took the important wicket of Chris Carter in his second over, courtesy of a brilliant diving one handed catch by Liam. This was the start of an outstanding spell of fast bowling by Jack that blew away the Chappel middle order. He took 5-15 off 7 overs, including 4 wicket maidens. Isaac Chapman bowled really well to concede only 16 runs off his 6 overs, before captain Tom brought himself on to clean up the tail taking 2-3. Chappel bowled out for 95 in the 32nd over.

The Green's reply didn't start well with both openers dismissed by the 6th over with only 13 on the board. James responded to the situation positively with several boundaries but he was losing partners at the other end. The Green's hopes of victory at this stage rested firmly on a significant innings by James, but when he departed having made 28 of the Green's 42-6 things looked as bleak as the weather. However Steely and Matt then came together for what was the match winning partnership, both batted really well, patiently defending the good balls while looking to score of the bad ones bowled. Unfortunately they could not see it through to the finish, Matt falling with 3 required and Steely falling 1 short before Giorgio pulled the winning runs through mid wicket in the 36th over.

It was a good win at the end of a difficult season, made even more satisfying by the contribution of the youngsters.
