Braintree III v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) on Sat 25 Jul 2026 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 41 runs

Match report Division 9 leader is a tough place to be. Copford were winning the league and we defeated them, then we were top and lost and this week it was Braintree's turn to lead the league - and they were duly beaten - by EAG!

Braintree won the toss and surprisingly put us into bat. We would have batted first on what looked like a flat, dry wicket that was likely to break up in the afternoons sunshine. We started positively with Nitja Patel (20) and Chris Chambers (31) playing some lovely shots. When they were both dismissed our innings seemed to have reached a pivotal moment. Jack Axon and Matt Norris swung the game firmly in our favour with a partnership of 159 before Jack was dismissed on 99 (off 97 balls). Matt scored a 'best ever for the Green' 82 off just 68 deliveries with 15 scintillating boundaries steering us to 267-3 off our allotted 40 overs.

This felt like a good total, but we've lost two games this season with similar scores being successfully chased by our opponents. There is something about defending a score in a close game, when an opponents is playing well, that is a real challenge. Braintree ratcheted up the pressure by scoring at the required 6.75 runs an over for the first ten overs and our bowling came under extreme pressure. A few fielding changes, conceding singles but protecting the boundaries and the introduction of slow bowlers became the new tactic and thanks to some terrific bowling from Bevan Guthrie (11 overs, 2-48) and Nitja Patel (10 overs, 3-45) we managed to take control of the match and the required run rate went into double figures. Some excellent all round fielding and a terrific caught and bowled by Thomas Riley dismissed Braintree's top player and the game was ours.

Hopefully we proved something to ourselves today that will help us as we enter the last five games of the season. Things are not always going to be easy. There are going to be moments when our opposition seems to have the upper hand. However, we are a very good team and with the right collective attitude and fight we can compete with anyone and turn any result in our favour.
