Match report An excellent win for the Green was a good team effort. Batting first, Halstead got off to a good start with an opening partnership of 100 before the 23rd over. David ‘I can bowl an over in one minute flat’ Merriday bowled several flat overs to slow things down somewhat with four maidens in his first five overs but the masterstroke was the introduction of Richard Polley’s tweakers. Coleman, who had previously hit the ball to all parts, soon chipped one to a grateful Jack Smith and Elsbury soon followed, well caught (just) by Giorgio. From then on, Halstead dobbed their way steadily to 189, with only 65 coming off the last 18 overs. Giorgio and Jack Smith bowled excellent second spells, but the stars were Polley (11-3-35-2) and Merriday (12-5-28-2).

A gettable total on a good pitch with short boundaries needed a positive start. Danny and Ally Hammond duly obliged, taking no fewer than 42 off the first three overs. When Danny was out, Blondy continued to pepper the boundary and we were applauding his 50 as the ball sailed again towards the next field when, to everyone’s surprise, it dropped down the throat of a waiting fielder on the edge. Chambers and Smith K. soon followed, but with overs in hand Richard Polley and Matt Norris steadied the ship and put on 57 before Matt was bowled for a determined 21. Two boundaries from Richard soon saw the Green home with four overs and two balls to spare, making it two wins out of three for the Saturday (DJM: ‘you can’t call it the Academy’) XI. (TJC)
