Match report Awesome Away Day at Colchester

On what looked to be a warm evening (but turned out to be freezing!) down at Colchester’s Castle Park ground, the Green just about arrived with 10 ladies – including 2 from our softball set up, Emma and Hattie and 2 hockey players! courtesy of Rachel. The half-term and long bank holiday weekend had taken a toll on availability but the Green, as always, were ready to enjoy the game. After losing the toss, the Green were sent out to field.

Rachel Watson and Katie Suckling opened the bowling. Watson bowled out the opener with a lovely ball in her second over. Karen ‘Stumpy’ Cutter, Sue Miller and new recruit, Jess White, shared the end of the first 10 overs, with Miller bowling a super ‘wide then a wicket’ combo for the first two balls. White bowled brilliantly, for her 3 overs, not taking any wickets but only going for 10 runs – a great effort for someone who had learnt what bowling was 10 minutes before the game! In a dramatic change up, for the second 10 overs, we saw Captain Cutter appearing behind the stumps and Diane ‘Dimps’ Pasfield showing us her bowling arm for a change. Ending with 0-11 off 3 overs, she’s quite the secret weapon! Watson returned to the bowling and took a wicket with the last ball of the game, with a stunning catch from hardball debutant Emma. The Green had been set 94 to win.

Watson and Pasfield opened the batting as usual, becoming an established pair at the top of the order. Some patient batting, sharing the strike and scoring 4s when offered led to both ladies retiring out on 25 apiece. At this point, with extras, the Green needed about 25 to win. Colchester however, changed tack. Having bowled every player in the team (apart from the wicketkeeper) for the first 10 overs, they then brought on their established bowlers to face our new pair of Suckling and Mindy Irven. The girls took a few overs to settle in but then started edging away at the total, defending sensibly and scoring runs where available, eventually getting us over the line with an over and 3 balls to spare. A cracking evening (bushel full of apples all round!) was had by all and a huge thanks to the super subs (some of whom we may have just about recruited!). We march on to next week away at Mistley… Green Army!
