Match report
‘Close but no cigar’
Having beaten Mistley at home, EAG ladies knew that they would be out to settle the score. Speculation was rife about the team that Mistley would field in an effort to topple The Green. To elated cheers from her team, Captain Cutter won the toss and elected to field.
In the sweltering heat, EAG ladies took to the field. Hannah Finbow-Jeffrey and Minal Patel (TP) opened the bowling with Patel making the early breakthrough, dismissing opener Jemima Martin for 2. Despite it being a little windy on the off-side, the rest of the top order however all retired not out on 25, including Nikki Brown who scored a nonchalant six 4s on her way. With the green fieldng out the last 10 overs with Sophie spicer succumbing to the heat and having to sit out leaving Mistley to find the gaps with a fielder short. The Green were now up against it but once again rallied with some careful catches from Sue Miller and Hannah stemming the flow of runs. The Green were set a target of 117 to chase.
With usual opener Diane Pasfield unavailable, Amy Finbow-Jeffrey opened with Sue Miller. A quick, straight ball relieved Amy of her post, bringing Patel into bat. At a pace akin to that of titration, Miller and Patel notched up the runs. Miller was bowled for 5, bringing Vicky Wrycraft to the crease. Patel and Wrycraft increased the pace a little and by the time Patel retired on 25 not out, Hannah saw some potential. Mistley were rattled, sending everyone to protect the boundary. Although Hannah smashed a very quick 19, it was too little, too late and EAG ladies finished on 106, just 12 runs short. A frustrating afternoon but in tough conditions the ladies showed passion and determination to the end – c’mon the Green!
