Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won By 5 Wickets

Match report The U14s continued their winning run by beating Sudbury by 5 wickets in a tense finish at the Heath on tuesday.

Sudbury won the toss and batted first. Issac and Matt P opened the bowling in excellent fashion bowling 5 maidens between then in the first 6 overs. Good bowling from all the Green bowlers had Sudbury in trouble at 16-6 off 9 overs, but a partnership of 41 for the 7th wicket helped Sudbury recover to 73-8 at the close. Isaac, Matt P, Jake all took two wickets and Richard and Matt D took one each.

When the Green batted, they again made hard work of what should have been a straightforward run chase. Sudbury were also a very good bowling side and made it very difficult to score runs, the Green lost five wickets, but Sam again kept calm to top score with an unbeaten 18 while Richard scored the winning run in 7 balls to spare.

Eventually another good win, that keeps the Green at the top of the league with one game to play against Frinton.

Coach's Comments: The first ten overs were some of the best fast bowling & fielding I have seen at this age group with three great catches by WK and slips. The Sudbury coach was impressed too. We didn't wrap it up quickly though and the change bowlers gave too much width allowing free hits by the middle order. We must bowl at the stumps and let them make the mistakes. Fielding generally crisp (nothing dropped) and well led by Richard but throw ins to Leighton consistently poor!

Batting again very fragile (only one player reached double figures - just not good enough at U14s) and, annoyingly, the top order got themselves out with silly shots rather than good bowling. Much more maturity and concentration needed together with technique work on facing (very good) off spin. Not much chance in next couple of weeks but I might explore doing some sessions after July if enyone interested (and not on holiday!). Well done boys. RP
