Eight Ash Green Cricket Club U13 v Colchester on Tue 25 May 2010 at 18:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won By 21 runs
Match report
In a game which started badly and got worse, EAG can only wonder at how they won this fixture against the best Britain’s Oldest Recorded Town could offer. The answer was Charlie Lovejoy who almost single handedly retrieved a desperate situation.
The game started badly when the rugby club contingent arrived with an attitude problem which started with no-one bothering with basic chores like getting the rope in, etc. and rapidly developed into a battle of wills with their coach who struggled to get the team to focus on the tough game in prospect. It was all 'a bit of a laugh' in stark contrast C&EE arrived to win and at 10 for 4 off four overs deservedly looked favourites.
Fortunately Charlie came to the crease and with some quick running between the stumps with Jamie Pollitt put the pressure back on the fielders. His best shots were some sweet pulls to leg and despite nearly running out of partners he clocked up 59 not out with only Pollitt achieving double figures in support to set a target of 115 for 7.
EAG opened with Dom Rice and the indefatigable Lovejoy and both bowled a pair of excellent deliveries to remove the openers in the first four overs. The accuracy of those that followed left a lot to be desired which backed up with sloppy fielding yielded one of the most excruciating sessions EAG Youth has seen for a long time.
In the next 16 overs only one further wicket was taken - the dangerous Adam Mayes - in an excellent spell of leg spin by Dom Blanchard. There was little evidence of captaincy, players drifted out of position, five catches were dropped or not even attempted and no fewer than THIRTY EIGHT extras including 23 wides were given away. The bowling was at times embarrassingly bad and much work is needed.
Despite this, C&EE lacked any real sense of urgency and stuttered to 94 for 3 off their 20 overs. It was a game that The Green really didn’t deserve to win and unless they quickly develop a much more mature attitude will really struggle at this level. RP.
