Witham II v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) on Sat 06 Jul 2019 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 63 runs
Match report
Another superb all-round performance from captain Keith Hammond led the Green to what was ultimately a convincing victory over Witham, by the margin of 63 runs.
It hadn't started that well when we were invited to bat and lost Stuart Hammond for a very rare duck. Witham kept the run rate in check for a good portion of our innings and I had thought that 180 would be a good total. However, Keith expertly found the gaps with precision and power as he accelerated to eventually reach 110 (from 121 balls), with 16 boundaries; this was yet another example of Keith's batting class. He was well supported by Ollie Stovell (50) who was able to push on after a difficult start, but the final total of 238-4 was joyously enhanced by Ollie Mewis with what can only be described as the epitome of a cameo innings. His unbeaten 32 came off just 13 balls and included 5 fours and one majestically timed maximum, much to the delight of his watching teammates.
Until the drinks break, Witham's reply kept the asking rate at an achievable level, but the regular fall of wickets was entirely to our advantage and ultimately took its toll on their challenge. Oli Firmin started things off with a snappy spell that claimed the top three, before first-change Keith strangled the life out of the middle order. His fifteen straight overs yielded another three wickets to enhance his hold on the leading wicket-taker position for the club, all at an economy rate of 3 runs per over. That set things up nicely for Ollie Stovell and Matt Parker to grab a brace apiece with their respective brands of off spin and despite a late rally from the Witham youngsters, we claimed victory just after 7pm and before the day's clouds came through with their threat to ruin the game.
