Purleigh v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 2nd XI (Saturday) on Sun 22 Jun 2008 at 2pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost
Match report
Upon arriving at Purleigh, Eight Ash Green were greeted by the fact that their opponents had racked up 488 the previous day. After losing the toss, the Green were put in to bat on a very green wicket. The day did not start to plan, as after a slow start two quick wickets were lost. Josh Lennard-Jones and Neil Brinded then set about rebuilding the innings, but when the latter fell, it triggered a mini collapse, with Trevor Lansdowne and Nathan Taylor both giving their wickets away within the space of a few balls. However, Lennard-Jones was determined not to do the same, knuckled down and defended anything straight, and tried to take advantage of the lightning quick outfield by attacking the bad balls. Rob Cronshaw and Jack Smith both came and went, and the only other resistance came from David Merriday, who was uncharacteristicly restrained in making his 7. Lennard-Jones continued to bat patiently at the other end, and brought up his maiden half-century on the penultimate ball of the innings. Eight Ash Green finished on 98-9 from their 45 overs.
98 seemed an almost impossible target to defend, but the Green got off to the best possible start. Jack Smith bowled a brilliant opening spell, and with the help of ever dependent David Merriday at the other end, Purleigh were soon 6-3. After Smith finished his 5 over spell, Rob Cronshaw came on and took two quick wickets to restrict Purleigh to 24-5, and Eight Ash Green were suddenly in with a good chance of winning the match. However despite David Merriday's figures of 1-18 and Jack Smith coming back on to finish with a superb 2-14, the Purleigh 6th wicket partnership kept on going. Josh Lennard-Jones was offered a rare chance to bowl late on, and picked up a consolation wicket. It was not to be though, Purleigh winning in the 35th over.
Despite a determined effort in the field, it never looked like 98 was going to be a big enough total, and so it proved.
