Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Nacton on Sat 09 Sep 2017 at 12:30
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 13 runs
Match report
We are going up! And what a way to do it, by winning a match that had thrills, spills and tension galore. The eventual margin of victory was 13 runs, but this game was in the balance until the last over, as two splendid teams fought out a terrific game of cricket, played the way the game should be played. So congratulations to the Green for the victory that secures promotion and a top two place in Div 5, but spare a thought for our visitors who pushed us all the way and came oh so close to spoiling the party.
Nacton had won a crucial toss, inviting us to bat first on a wicket that had taken some water over the preceding 24 hours and was not the easiest to score on. The loss of Porky in the first over was not quite what we were hoping for, but the ship was steadied by skipper Keith, ably supported by a proactive knock from Joe. Nevertheless, their best efforts were often thwarted by the vagaries of the pitch and for a long time we looked to be heading for a score of perhaps 160 or thereabouts. Alex & Ollie managed to push the rate along as the change bowlers came on, not that they didn't also
carry a threat, and that was followed by some belligerent hitting from Stephen & Drew that enabled us to reach 200. 83 runs came from the last 10 overs, an effort that ultimately made the difference between winning & losing.
The Nacton reply was barely underway when Matt struck twice, both leg before decisions, which in itself shows great honesty in our visitors, particularly in such a crucial match. When Mark grabbed his first (of three), Nacton were 32-3 and thoughts turned to the reverse fixture when we bowled out our hosts for a mere 71. But this Nacton side were made of sterner stuff and after a lengthy rain delay they were straight back into action and taking the attack to our bowlers. There was great relief when Drew snared the first of his four wicket haul, but Nacton were still up with our run-rate and doubts as to the outcome were starting to grow. If we thought it was won at 145-7 in the 40th over, that idea was soon dispelled and as the equation reached 30 needed off of 3 overs, maybe Nacton were even marginal favourites. Thankfully, Drew & Mark overcame the nerves and as the sky darkened further, at 7:35pm we finally secured the win to guarantee promotion - who thought we would be playing that late into a September evening!
Thanks to both teams for providing such an entertaining, close-fought match, played in really good spirits; credit too to Nacton for staying behind for a beer even though they must have been bitterly disappointed - go well next season lads.
