Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Gt Bromley on Sat 26 Aug 2017 at 12:30
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
The Green promotion drive got back on track with a resounding 8 wicket victory over Great Bromley earning a maximum 20 points. With no disrespect to our opponents who battled hard, this was a comfortable victory, achieved with more than 30 overs to spare.
The primary talking points will hereby be known as "strop-gate" and "flipflop-gate". The former refers to our beloved bar-keep Matt Parker who threw all sorts of things out of the pram having been taken off with 4 wickets in the bag; indeed, he was still chuntering about it long after the match was over, much to the amusement of his teammates. As for the flipflop affair, that refers to Mark's inability to give Alex run out as he had virtually fallen over his own broken flipflop and was trying to maintain his dignity (and balance) when the bails fell. As Alex was reluctant to give himself out, so his innings continued, for a while at least, until he threw away the chance of another half century having just started to bludgeon the attack to all parts of the Heath.
Back to the details of the two innings: Keith decided to invite Bromley to bat first and initially their approach frustrated the Green. However, from 30-0 after 5 overs, Bromley slumped to 59-6 in the 22nd as Mark nabbed a brace of wickets and Matt four, including one to a delightfully deceiving slower ball. Bromley rallied and headed towards their first batting point without further loss until Drew came along to roll-over the tail with a four-for of his own (and at a lower average than Matt!).
So the Green had a target of 117 in 50 overs and Porky started off like he wanted to finish it in 10. Once he went to a miss-timed pull, our truly green Greenie Alex took over, making 46, including 18 off of one over. With Joe holding up his end and then pushing on after Alex's untimely departure, victory was achieved in time for the football results (am I allowed to mention that sport here?).
The match was too one-sided to be especially entertaining, but our priority was 20 points and that was achieved, so well done to Keith and the lads. With other results going our way, first place in the league is back in the hands of the Green - let's keep it there!
