Eight Ash Green Cricket Club PieRates XI v Great Horkesley& Lexden on Wed 08 Jun 2016 at 18:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won By 12 runs
Match report
Apologies if the stats are not right you can blame GH&L:
Ahoy! At last! The PIErates victory against GH&L was the first of the season and hopefully not the last! However, more importantly it means that Stephen Nunn is the only senior captain without a win under his belt!!
Alas, Craptin M Parker (off of 43 against Clacton) won the toss and with a supposedly strong batting line up we made GH&L bowl. After the first 11-ball-over went for 17 runs Keith and Luke were looking as stable as a house for a horse. However, Luke playing a decent shot but was equally caught as decently at backward point ended this promising partnership. Then Mr Pool came into bat, clearly Nick has been hanging around with Neil Brinded too much as he hit a very tame 1 off of 24 balls, beating his captains previous 20 ball duck for the Saturday team last year, scoring on his 2nd to last ball before being given out by DNA network’s team mate Alex Hammond, that being Alex's only contribution in the game besides a dropped catch (fined). Keith meanwhile down the other end had hit a lovely 45 ball 50 and really kept the game alive, Matt butter fingers Norris came in to scramble some runs which were lost in the middle stages of the game. At the end of the innings the PIErates managed to score 116 which felt a bit below the target but perfectly defendable.
Opening the bowling was farmer MacDonald in his first over finding the right length and only going for 4, meanwhile down the other end was Tony Lee fired up as per usual with any balls in his hand keeping runs tight only going for 6 runs in 16 balls in his first 2 overs. Calum unlucky not to get a wicket but Tony on the other hand picked up two, one of which caught so lazily one-handed by Keith at cover of course seeing him fined for it. Meanwhile, Craptin M Parker came on to bowl getting a wicket with his first ball, caught by L Keeble who had to run all the way from behind the stumps… to the stumps and was just pleased that he could have a break while the new batsmen came in. Matt Murray replaced Tony, Matt M repeating his Saturday heroics; Matt Norris deciding to catch one after dropping 2 off his captain (fined!) Murray kept GH&L tied down. Annoyingly, with all this pressure and 2 run outs from Keith (fined) GH&L still needed only 19 runs in the 8 balls in the last over so Craptin Parker took the responsibility looking to redeem himself after some questionable decisions earlier on. With relatively sound death bowling with more variety than Nick’s haircut saw GH&L top scorer miss a STRAIGHT ball and hitting leg stump. It wasn’t enough for GH&L as they fell 12 runs short only nicking a boundary down to third man which meant the PIErates secured their first win of the season. A well-deserved win washed down with a well-deserved Doombar, which is only £10 a jug on Saturday!
Thanks to all who came and watched and had a PIE after, would be great to see you all again next week where we take on local rivals West Bergholt.
Up the PIES!
