Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 50 runs

Match report The Green came second to a strong West Bergholt team in a reduced overs match after morning rain. The platform for Bergholt's 177 was an opening partnership of 77 between Banks and Zubair. After skipper Matt Murray dismissed both openers, their lower order provided less resistance and Matt finished with the excellent fixtures of 5-31. Kerry Downes capped his debut with a smart caught and bowled, and Craig Axon bowled two very tidy overs at the end and took a couple of wickets, one of which involved a very sharp catch by Nitya Patel. There were also two wickets for Jack Smith, who bowled excellently again without much luck. Luke Coppin and Nitya Patel bowled well without success. Bergholt's 177 from 35 overs seemed slightly above par but gettable.

After Luke Keeble was out early, Tony Lee and Tim Chambers put on 66 for the second wicket, but were never quite able to dominate some good Bergholt bowling. After they were both out before we had reached 80, Jack Smith followed soon afterwards, Sam Collins thumped his first ball into the hands of a grateful fielder and Craig was out in an unfortunate mix-up after a certain four got stuck in the long grass by the boundary edge. Jack Axon batted confidently, however, and Matt Murray hit the shot of the day (shouting 'run them' as the ball disappeared high into the distant trees) as the Green chased an extra bonus point. We fell three short. To lose by 50 was by no means a bad defeat and we look forward to playing West Bergholt again later in the season. (TJC)
