Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Nowton on Sat 12 Jun 2021 at 12 noon
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 10 runs
Match report
In an entertaining and occasionally feisty encounter, the Green came through to win by 10 runs in the last over of the match. The outcome had been in the balance throughout Nowton's innings, but we held our nerve to claim victory.
Batting first, we used up our full allocation of 45 overs in reaching 204. Although there were a number of low scores and only three players reached double figures, there were plenty of batsmen who fought for the cause and supported the main contributors Keith Hammond, who made 59 and Ollie Stovell who reached 70. Neither of those two were at their most fluent best on a bouncy track, but they stuck at it and mixed defiant defence with a number of delightful drives and pulls as they held the innings together. Wickets fell steadily towards the end of the innings as we looked to increase the scoring rate but eventually we posted what we hoped would be a competitive total.
Our attack was led by JP who bowled a fabulous 12-over spell (2-39) book-ended with wicket maidens that claimed the two Nowton openers. The second of these was crucial, breaking a century partnership that was threatening to take the game away from us. JP also thought he had the wicket of the visiting skipper Walker early in his innings, thanks to a stupendous catch behind the stumps by Rob Lewis, but the appeal was in vain and Walker looked increasingly likely to deny us victory as he dominated the reply in reaching a century. However, that didn't take into account Keith's ability to bowl straight and induce mistakes, a priceless quality that ultimately brought him another five wicket haul (5-48). With Keith and Ollie (3-54) chipping away at the Nowton batting order, so our chances of winning improved, until 11 were needed from the final over with two wickets remaining. With Walker on strike their hopes were high, but JP pouched a crucial catch at long-off and with that wicket went Nowton's hopes.
