Match report
At last, at long last, we were able to enjoy village cricket again. OK, it wasn't fully competitive and circumstances restricted us to a 20/20 match, but it was still a proper cricket match. As the country slowly begins to turn towards life after the Covid-19 lockdown, it was just so good to get back out on Fordham Heath and be once again treated to the sound of leather on willow.
The whole experience was somewhat surreal, with the pavilion largely out of bounds, everybody sitting apart from each other and breaks in play every 6 overs to sanitise hands and ball - the first time any kind of ball tampering is regarded as accepted practice. What was of greater distress to those playing or watching was the lack of draught beer, but sacrifices have to be made.
So to the match. Kelvedon won the toss and elected to bat and made 170/6 in their 20 overs. There were 2 wickets apiece for Ollie Mewis & Jens Wair, the others going to Stephen Nunn & new boy Charlie Adamson . The pitch perhaps played a little slowly and a number of players struggled with their timing, while the odd ball was seen to spit off a length, but overall it was a good cricket wicket and 170 was a more than respectable total.
In reply, the Green fell 28 runs short as we closed on 142/4, the highlight being 52 from Stuart Hammond before he retired not out. Stuart seems not to have noticed that it's about 10 months since he held his bat, as he did what he does best, stroking and pulling the ball to all parts; had he stayed in we would certainly have got closer to the victory target, but winning was not what today was all about. The final overs were played out in increasingly heavy rain, but we made it to the end and most people seemed to enjoy themselves. It's good to be back.
