Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Mildenhall III on Sat 10 Aug 2019 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
The promotion drive remains on course, but once again the Green were made to work hard for victory; this week we were led home by Ali Hammond, whose composed innings enabled us to recover from a mini crisis.
All that came as night was drawing in, so before I go any further let me take you back to the Mildenhall innings. Their openers seemed to have seen off the new ball as we moved into the 10th over with no wickets down, but eventually the redoubtable Jonathan Purser made the breakthrough, even if it was a leg-side strangle. That wicket, and a second claimed a few overs later was just reward for JP during a spell where he passed the outside edge on countless occasions. JP’s partner Oli Firmin also collected a pair of wickets, as he claimed seniority to bowl downhill, with the wind largely at his back; don’t worry JP, your turn will come when you’re the elder statesman of the attack. We were well placed with Mildenhall 58-4 approaching the mid-point of their innings, but they dug in on a wicket that offered plenty of bounce and eventually posted a respectable 168-9. That we only missed out on one bowling point was down to a flurry of wickets in the last 10 overs or so, with that wicket-taking machine Keith Hammond inviting no less than four of the visitors to add to his already impressive season’s haul. Drew Woodhouse was the other wicket taker as he bowled a decent stint to make his trip down from the Smoke worthwhile.
As befits a team that have almost forgotten how to lose, we started our reply in confident mood, expecting the runs to be knocked off in good time. However, the Mildenhall bowlers had other ideas, notably Martin Taylor who bowled 15 straight overs from the top end and claimed 3-31 as we slipped to 51-4 in the 16th over. For once Stuart Hammond was unable to anchor the innings, so Ali was given the chance to spend some time at the crease. Ali very much made the most of it, combining cultured drives with a few belligerent blows to finish unbeaten on 65. Joe Young had helped to steady the ship with a crucial knock, but when he fell Keith reluctantly strapped on his pads to join his cousin in an unbroken 71 run stand that saw us to victory with 15 balls to spare.
What made the day even better, was to see so many of the IIs join us at the Green for the closing stages of the match, especially as the lads had achieved a resounding victory at previously unbeaten West Bergholt. It’s a good time to be a Greenie.
