Halstead II v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) on Sat 03 Aug 2019 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report A cultured century from Stuart Hammond led the Green to a six-wicket victory at Halstead and early indications are that it was enough to send us to the top of Division 4. Halstead battled gamely and for a while were looking to generate an upset, but Stuart’s calm assurance saw us home.
That Halstead reached 200-8 in their innings was slightly surprising after Oli Firmin and Jonathan Purser accounted for both openers in the first five overs. However, whilst the pitch offered some seam movement, we had to wait another 17 overs for the next breakthrough. In truth, for periods of the Halstead innings we appeared to be a little flat in the field, with one or two unnecessary miss-fields and even El Presidente dropped one behind the sticks – best not to celebrate the wicket until the ball is in the gloves, one would think 😊. As it was, Ali Hammond picked up a brace of wickets in a short spell, whilst in the latter part of the innings Keith Hammond, Stephen Nunn & Joe Young each claimed a wicket, the skipper also effecting a run out all on his own.
A target of 201 to win didn’t appear overly daunting but the Halstead bowlers initially offered few free hits and our opening partnership of 86 came at less than 4 an over. Alex Hammond fell for 36 trying to accelerate, while the required rate crept up to a run-a-ball and just beyond. With the Halstead spinners strangling the scoring rate for a time, the pressure seemed to be mounting. Meanwhile, the calmest man of all was Stuart who knew exactly how to pace his innings and see us home to victory. Joe joined him in a second wicket partnership of 81 before he was adjudged leg before for 30; now I hesitate to criticise any umpiring decision, but Joe was incredulous at being given out, having been struck just south of the armpit! Steve and Keith came and went in quick time, the latter reluctantly given out by brother Alex – not sure if Keith though it was a bump ball or he just couldn’t believe he’d hit it straight at a fielder. The winning run came in the penultimate over, but it was some time before that that the march to victory was effectively assured. Stuart had seen us home and a quick look at his stats makes fascinating reading – he reached his half century from 90 balls, but took only another 35 to convert it to a century, with only six of those 35 being dot balls; as I said, he had it all under control and knew exactly what he was doing all along. Well played, sir.

An unbeaten 108 from Stuart Hammond (right) guided EAGCC 1st XI to their 9th win in 10 games at Halstead on Saturday. It was a performance that not only won him the Colchester Brewery Man of the Match but also put The Green at the top of Div 4 for the first time this season.
