Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Coggeshall II on Sat 13 Jul 2019 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 82 runs

Match report Eight Ash Green notched up another victory at Fordham Heath by the comfortable margin of 82 runs. Victory was achieved on a really tough batting track where we probably over-achieved by 50 runs and then sat back to enjoy a bowling masterclass from the evergreen Alastair Woodcock.
With the sky overcast and the wicket offering a greener tinge that usual it was no surprise that we were invited to bat after losing the toss. Not only did the strip offer seam movement, but the bounce was somewhat variable, with a number of balls popping off a good length to disturb the batsmen. One such delivery accounted for one Hammond (Keith) early on, but then Stuart & Alex dug in for a 98 run partnership that was to give the rest of the batting order freer reign to attack later in the innings. Alex eventually fell for 37 and when Stuart's patient 64 was part of a middle order collapse that left the Green at 167-6 there was considerable doubt about whether we would last the 45 overs. Thankfully, Ali Hammond (22*) and Matt Norris (a belligerent 27) steadied the ship and with Coggeshall offering up a near half-century of extras, we ultimately posted 231-8. If Stuart had thought it a 170-180 pitch while he was out there, this represented a hugely challenging total for our visitors to chase.
As Coggeshall opened their reply, Jonathan Purser was able to forget his first ball misery with the bat (sorry to mention it, JP!) with a probing spell that brought him the first wicket, while at the other end snicko would have been handy in resolving a dispute for Oli Firmin and Coggeshall's eventual top-scorer Goding (50). Firmin went on to claim two wickets, but thereafter it was really the Woody show. Bowling up the hill, his left-arm around the wicket line was just too much for most Coggeshall batsmen, with three victims undone by the straight ball and three more unable to read the ball sufficiently to avoid hitting it in the air. Not surprisingly, Woody was later named man of the match, although that man Norris denied him the glory of a seven-for as he claimed the last to fall.
A good day for the Green was completed with a visit from a number of players who had represented the IIs today, especially as they thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Mersea and recorded a resounding 10 wicket victory.

Woody wins COM

The Green is indebted to wife Caroline who kindly let husband Alastair Woodcock out for a rare appearance this Saturday. He celebrated by picking up the Colchester Brewery Man of the Match award for a six wicket haul against Coggeshall. Pictured handing Woody his award is fellow club legend Colin Hammond. Colin's side profile quietly confirms he has long since retired but with four Hammonds playing in the game, the dynasty survives.
