Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report On a beautifully sunny afternoon with Fordham Heath looking its radiant best, the Green eased to an 8 wicket victory over Worlington to keep the pressure on the teams above us in the league.
Stand-in skipper Stuart Hammond invited Worlington to bat first and then watched the opening pair steadily build a partnership. Although Oli Firmin kept things tight, for once he was wicketless and it took the arrival of Jonathan Purser to make the first breakthrough; JP picked up a second soon after to keep the visitors in check, but the Worlington total continued to tick along. The introduction of spin twins Ollie Stovell and Jens Wair sparked something akin to a collapse as they each snared three wickets, Ollie also playing a major role in two run outs (with assists from our veteran 'keeper Richard Parker, who displayed his usual athleticism behind the stumps, rolling back the years once more). The tenth wicket fell from the last ball of the innings to ensure we would be claiming maximum bowling points, as Worlington were all out for 195.
We welcomed James Parker back to open our reply and looked forward to seeing him at his belligerent best. However, today was not his day as he fell cheaply, so just for a change it was left to a pair of Hammonds to share a superb 185 run partnership that very nearly saw us home. The strip was not the easiest to bat fluently on (oh for some prolonged sunshine when the square is being prepared) but Stuart fought throughout to close on an unbeaten 73, whilst Alex perished so close to the winning line having reached 92. Yes, he was frustrated at not staying out there to the end, but Alex did find more fluency with the bat and made a major contribution towards what became our fifth straight victory; the challenge will be to keep that run going at top of the table Tuddenham next week.
