Elmstead II v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) on Sat 15 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 98 runs
Match report
The Green's winning run stretched to four consecutive games after a comfortable 98 run victory over Elmstead, built on the back of a magnificent 212 run opening partnership between Stuart & Keith Hammond.
That partnership certainly responded to the challenge of being put in, although the conditions continually offered something to the bowlers and neither batsman was at his fluent best or truly felt "in". That Stuart reached 88 whilst Keith claimed yet another century (112) speaks volumes for their ability to overcome such challenges. Keith gave one chance on 28, but was grateful that the wicket-keeper's juggling ended with the ball on the ground, whilst both only perished to catches at long on in the chase for quick runs at the back end of the innings.
A target of 243 always looked to be beyond our hosts and although they overcame the loss of an early wicket to Oli Firmin (3-31) to build a partnership, they struggled to keep up with a demanding asking rate. A burst of four quick wickets to the swing of Firmin and Ollie Mewis (2-37) put the Green firmly in charge as Elmstead slipped to 56-5, although Mewis suffered the indignity of being removed from the attack having bowled two no balls above waist height, but his work had already been done by then. Keith replaced him for all of one ball, no doubt the shortest spell of his life, coming back later to complete the victory with the last wicket. Ollie Stovell's day improved (after an unfortunate duck) as in his short spell as he span one past a non-existent defensive shot. Jens Wair then enjoyed a brief spell that brought him figures of 3-23, capping a good day in the field for Jens: he had earlier taken two steepling catches that swirled in the wind. Indeed, the outfielding was generally good, with Stuart also taking a well-judged catch in the deep. Overall, this was an extremely efficient display and the 20 points for victory were very welcome.
