Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Academy XI off to a winning start!
Despite chronic availability problems, the ten men of the Development XI (aka Academy XI) achieved in their first game what had proved impossible on a Saturday throughout most of last season - victory! The blend of youth and experience, plus a real team effort, resulted in an encouraging first win in the first match to be played on Kelvedon’s new second square.
Winning the toss, Danny put the opposition in and a combination of excellent bowling, athletic fielding and, for once, near faultless catching, saw Kelvedon lose regular wickets. A total of 131 all out was probably a good 50 runs below par. Everybody bowled well and wickets were shared between Marston (2-33), D’Anna (1-24), Chambers M (2-11), Guy (2-26) and Nunn S (1-20). Special mentions for impressive fielding go to Jack Airey (two nonchalant catches), Giorgio d’Anna (three catches) and Richard Nunn (an excellent skier and a smart run out). Danny marshalled the troops astutely. Kev Smith behind the timbers recovered from an early spillage to keep increasingly well.
The Green batting got off to a stuttering start with four back in the hutch before we had reached 40. Marsy and Danny then steadied the ship and added 66 in 9 overs before Marsy went lbw for 39. Danny continued to thump the ball to all parts and made Barry’s scoring job easier by scoring only fours and sixes in his 48. Would it have been the first Green 50 to be achieved only in boundaries? With 20 still needed, panic might have set in but Giorgio and Stephen Nunn, old heads on young shoulders, saw the Green through without further mishap to a 4 wicket win with 17 overs to spare.
A win in our first match was an excellent all-round team effort. Roll on the Felixstowe game at home next week!
