Abberton III v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sun 15 Jun 2008 at 2pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won
Match report
Having won the toss on a green pitch in overcast conditions, Captain David Merriday made the decision to send Abberton in to bat. This decision was vindicated when Giorgio D’Anna made the breakthrough with the score on just 24. Shortly after, Merriday picked up the wicket of the other opening batsman, well caught at long-on by Josh Lennard-Jones who clung on largely due to fear of the wrath of the bowler if it was put down. Every bowler bowled economically and all of them were rewarded for their efforts. The opening attack of U15 players Jack Smith and Giorgio D’Anna bowled with pace and accuracy, and picked up 1-38 and 2-41 respectively. Will Hopcroft bowled 5 overs for 23, picking up 2 wickets along the way. His fellow spinner David Merriday once again displayed his reliability in not leaking runs, his 10 overs going for just 34 for the loss of one wicket. Finally Ali Markham-Lee bowled 10 overs on the trot returning impressive figures of 2-36, one of them an unplayable delivery that beat the batsmen’s defence and clipped the top of off stump. Abberton finished their innings on 178-8.
Setting about reaching a target of 179 to win, opening batsman Neil Brinded fell in the fifth over. In the overs that followed the scoring rate stumbled somewhat, as Eight Ash Green crept towards Abberton’s total. However Tim Tarleton and Will Hopcroft began to find form, and built a 50 partnership in a relatively short space of time. When Hopcroft fell for 21 it was down to Trevor Lansdowne to finish where he’d left off. He did not disappoint as he and Tarleton built another partnership of 50 or more. However when both batsmen fell in quick succession, with just 20 runs needed off the last 5 overs, Abberton sensed victory. However Josh Lennard-Jones batted with a succession of partners, and on the last ball of the game, needed one run to win with one wicket in hand. With the field in Lennard-Jones mistimed the ball through mid wicket to bring the exciting match to an end, the Green finishing as deserving victors.
