Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Two Counties 1st XI (Saturday) v Woodbridge on Sat 25 Aug 2018 at 12.30
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
The season may be threatening to go down with a whimper after this rare home defeat, but at least we had a proper cricket match with the result in the balance until the very end.
Well played to Woodbridge who ground out the victory after winning the toss and making the most of a green wicket that offered plenty to the bowlers if they put the ball in the right place. That no player in either team reached 40 shows the challenge the batsmen faced, with no less than four Greenies passing 30, but the only truly fluent batting came from Porky and a late cameo from Oli. At 81-4, even 175 looked a long way distant, but Stephen & Joe enjoyed extended time in the middle to get some decent batting points and enable us to post what we hoped was a competitive total.
The Woodbridge scorecard looked remarkably similar to ours, with batsmen appearing to get in, or at least spend time at the crease, before falling. Wickets were shared amongst all the bowlers, with three for Sam, two each for Stephen and Keith & one each for Matt & Oli, but in the end we fell agonisingly short. Three catches went down, including one that would have enabled us to grab an unlikely tie, but the match wasn't lost in that one moment, rather in the loss of crucial wickets at the wrong times, a few too many extras and maybe bowling that at times didn't threaten the stumps as much as would have been ideal.
To finish on a bright note, happy 21st to Frazer and well played JP for his second ton in a month as his superb 155 led the 2s to victory at Witham. Finally, thanks and goodbye to Bev whose return to the Green this summer has been a delight for all who have had the pleasure to play, talk (and drink) with him.
