Great Horkesley& Lexden v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club North Essex 1st XI (Sunday) on Sun 25 Jun 2017 at 13:00
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 10 runs
Match report
This was a proper, closely-fought cricket match that ended with an unexpected 10 run win for the Green. It was unexpected because GH&L needed only 14 to win with 5 wickets down, but the lads kept believing and a stumping from the ever-agile Neil Brinded precipitated a clatter of wickets and with GH&L a man short, we eventually won with something to spare. That something was effectively the batting contribution from Matt Parker - his magnificent unbeaten 11 largely being the difference between the teams!
The foundations of our batting effort were laid by openers Will Spicer (42) & Ollie Stovell (65), but the home-team spinners kept things quite tight and prevented a significant acceleration. Nevertheless, a target of 170 was considered challenging by the home team.
GH&L took a rather more aggressive approach to the Green bowling during their reply, so were always ahead of the required rate, despite another 3 wicket haul for Jake Harris. However, with 5 batsmen scoring between 20 & 35, what GH&L lacked was a man to see them home and as our opening bats came on to bowl and picked up 3 cheap wickets between them, so it was left to that man Parker to deliver the coup de grace, courtesy of a flying catch from the aforementioned Brinders.
A thoroughly enjoyable game of cricket with a reminder to never give up. Well done lads.
