Eight Ash Green Cricket Club PDQ 2nd XI v Abberton & District on Mon 29 Aug 2011 at 1pm
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Eight Ash Green’s 2nd XI recorded a comfortable 8 wicket victory over Abberton .
The Green won the toss and put Abberton into bat with youngsters Isaac Chapman and Alex Enright leading the attack. Although there was no early breakthrough, the run rate was kept relatively low with Abberton struggling to find the gaps and score. EAG were rewarded for their sharp fielding in the 7th over when Matt Norris took advantage of a poor running decision to hit the stumps. Matthew Pyatt followed suit to run the new batsman out in a similar fashion to leave Abberton 18-2 after 9 overs.
The introduction of Pyatt into the attack saw the fall of two further wickets with Richard Polley holding onto a catch to dismiss dangerman Barry Rudlin. Matt Norris replaced Enright and 10 overs straight through returning 1-21.
Spinners Polley and David Merriday could only limit the run rate, unable to find a way through and Abberton looked to be building a partnership at the crease for the first time until the Green pounced on another opportunity to run out, this time with James Fisher taking the plaudits. Alex Enright returned to the attack to take a further two wickets to add to the Green’s tally before Abberton closed on 138-8 at the end of the innings.
Richard Polley and James Fisher opened the batting for the Green and despite having 10 runs on the scoreboard after 3 overs, no runs were scored off the bat until the 4th over when Nathan Taylor came in at number 3, after Fisher had skied to cover.
Nathan batted fluently until he was bowled for 19 making way for Colin Hammond who built a steady partnership with Polley. With assistance from the 47 extras Abberton conceded (a total of 64 wides being bowled in the match) the pair put on a partnership of 100, only marginally less than their combined age, to win the game by 8 wickets. Polley finished on 44* and Hammond on 29*and victory was completed in the 38th over.
