Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost By 1 Wicket

Match report The 2nd XI travelled to high flying Gosfield and lost by one wicket in a last ball thriller.The match was played on a wicket that was very low and slow, with the out field looking as though it had not seen a mower in weeks, a high scoring match was always unlikely.

Batting first the Green were soon in trouble with two wickets falling in the first over and things got worse when the skipper was controversially stumped with the score on 11. Richard and Josh started to rebuild the innings, before Richard was out for 24, caught in the covers. Josh and Colin then came together to put on 84 for the 5th wicket, both batted sensibly on what was a difficult wicket to bat on. Josh deservedly got his 50 before falling to the very next ball, edging to the keeper. Colin (38no) then shepharded the tail through to the end of the innings as the Green closed on 151-9, which on this wicket was more competitive than it might appear.

Gosfield made a solid start, and although Matt made an early breakthrough, were making steady progress towards the target before Colin came on and bowled a really tight spell,only conceeding 15 runs off his 10 overs, which built pressure on the batsmen. Bowling at the other end Issac took 3 wickets in an excellent spell, while DJM & Richard also bowled well taking 3 & 2 wickets respectively as the match moved to an exciting climax. The last over began with Gosfield needing 12 to win, but Gosfield's batsman Morris launched the first ball for 6 and the momentum swung towards Gosfield. With the scores tied with one ball remaining the batsmen scrambled a bye to win the match.

Although an exciting finale with several very good personal performances, it was a deeply disappointing result after coming so close to winning, which was reflected in the rather subdued atmosphere in the pub after the match.
