Little Bardfield v Eight Ash Green Cricket Club PDQ 1st XI on Sun 19 Sep 2010 at
Eight Ash Green Cricket Club Lost By 8 Wickets
Match report
When Luke and Tony walked out to bat at 12.30, James and Nippy were the only other members of the team to have arrived at the ground, the other 7 players were still enjoying a tour of the picturesque country lanes in the Bardfield area, and in the case of Liam, driving in the direction of Braintree ! However they had all arrived within 15 minutes of the start, which was just as well because the Bardfield opening bowlers soon had the Green in trouble at 30-5. Luke, James and Tony all fell to outstanding catches (Tony's was particularly unfortunate as it was commented that this was the first time he had 'middled' the ball all season!) while Stephen battled determindly for 10 overs for his 2 runs. Richard P and Nippy staged something of a recovery by putting on 38 for the 6th wicket before Nippy 'holed out' on the boundary for 24, Jack hit a flurry of 4s & 6s before hitting a return catch for 28, while Richard remained the not out batsman on 55. The innings closed with one ball remaining on 135, which was a lot better than everyone was expecting at about 1.00.
Bardfield set about the run chase in something of a hurry, opening batsman Hobbs raced to 22 before Jack deservedly bowled him, but this just brought the Bardfield Captain Hymas to the crease who immediately started smashing the ball to all parts of the ground, regardless of whether it was a good ball or not. Jack was the pick of the bowlers taking 1-21, while 'little' Richard picked up a late wicket before being hit for 6 into the next field for the winning runs.
Although it was another heavy defeat, morale remained high and a new nickname of 'Moby Nip' was found for Nippy, which caused much amusement in the field !
